Open Source India - Conference Expo in March

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Recessions are the worst times to be in, especially if you are a technology startup without any visible revenues. John Doeer, valley's most successful VC had already said around 3 months ago to switch to Open Source implementations if your company is not making any money.

In the context of India, companies like Microsoft have failed to understand the need for budget licensing. In such a situation, the Free and Open source community is doing a terrific job by pitching companies to move towards Open Source software.

Between March-12th and 14th a conference and expo will be held in Chennai. The event is a must for Software Developers and IT Managers from IT / ITeS companies, BFSI, Manufacturing, R&D and of course the Government ;-) It is mainly targeted for Small and Medium Enterprises of India to keep their operating costs under control in this economic downturn.

OSIIndia is also calling for Papers and Speakers. Refer to OSIIndia's website for further details.

Poor Q4 Global Mobile Handset Manufacturers

Monday, February 02, 2009

The Q4 of every year is very strong when it comes to Mobile Handset sales, but due to poor economic conditions Q4 2008 saw a dip in sales over Q3 which has not happened in the past 4 years.

Nokia topped the list with shipment of 113 mn handsets followed by Samsung 52 mn. LG managed to ship half of Samsung 25 mn while Sony Ericsson stood at the fourth place shipping 24 mn handsets in Q4 2008.

Nokia has a market share of 37.1%. Samsung - 17.3% LG 8.4%, Sony Ericsson - 8% and the rest by others. [Q4 2008 shipment share]

In the higher end handsets / converged devices, Nokia shipped 15 mn pieces while RIM Blackberry shipped 6.7 mn and Apple's iPhone clocked sales of 4.4 mn closely followed by HTC selling 4 mn smartphones. [all Q4 08 sales]

Nokia with Symbian platform had a market share of 31.5% , RIM 14%, iPhone 9.2% and HTC 8.3% for converged / smart phone shipments in Q4 2008.

Nokia expects "destocking" by operators and retail distributors, resulting in a lower sell-in than sell-through in 1Q09. As such, Nokia is now guiding 1Q09 to be below normal seasonality.
