The Indian Internet Service Providers have demanded that VoIP based calls be made legal for calling within India [Local / NLD / STD]. VoIP for ISD calls is already permitted by the DoT. In this connection the TRAI has issued a consultation paper inviting expert views on the same. TRAI is specifically requesting views on the following,
- Permitting ISPs to provide Internet telephony to call PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network)/PLMN (Public Land Mobile Network) subscribers within the country.
- Numbering issues and Emergency Dialing
- Effective monitoring and lawful interception
- Issues related to Interconnection with PSTN/PLMN including applicability of present IUC regime.
We believe this will increase the competition in
NLD sector and rates which are already falling will fall further. If you have any comments, you can send them to skgupta@trai.gov.in
