Winfast DTV1800 Tuner Card - Review

Friday, November 30, 2007

Winfast DTV1800H is a hybrid PCI TV Tuner capable of receiving analog as well as terrestrial digital [DVB-T] transmissions available in Mumbai, Delhi and other Tier-I cities.

It has a Conexant CX23380 and Zarlink 10353 chipset which enables it to decode stereo audio. The audio cable connects internally to the PC Audio solutions saving you from external wiring. The front-end is provided by the excellent WinFast PVR2 that features Scheduling and Time Shifting as well as recording in WMV, transport stream as well as MPEG-2. The PVR-2 even lets you use two TV-Tuners simultaneously, so you can either watch two TV channels, watch one and record on the other or watch TV and use the second for surveillance.

Video as well as audio quality is extremely good even on the weakest cable TV signal. This piece of hardware is priced competitively at Rs 3,900.

Brother MFC-5460 Network Printer Review

Tuesday, November 27, 2007

Tired of being ripped by HP Printers and Cartridge lobby ? Sure, here is Brother International from Japan presenting Brother MFC-5460CN Multi Function Network device.

MFC-5460CN can print, Scan, Fax and Copy as well. The printer is really compact compared to other bulky printers in the market. At the front is a 2 line, backlit LCD indicator that reports a lot of data and also lets you access the control panel menu. Connectivity is by means of USB or Network Interface and its a little messy.

The printer sports a resolution of 6000X1200 dpi - very high in our opinion. There are four color cartridges and easily accessible by a door in the front. The tray can accommodate 100 pages. Printing of course was very slow. It took 27 seconds to print a normal text page and 50 seconds in the best mode.

The flatbed scanner can scan legal sized documents. Quality of a scanned document was very good, but once again was little slower than dedicated scanners.

The inbuilt 33.6 kbps fax can store up to 400 pages and is capable of broadcasting up to 150 locations. The phone book memory is 100 numbers.

Overall this is a Value for Money printer if you are a Home or A Small Office Home Office [SOHO] user. Suggested retail price is Rs 13,500.

Microsoft Office 2007 goes Pre-Paid in India

Thursday, November 15, 2007

Buoyed by the success of pre-paid mobile services, we saw the introduction of pre-paid debit cards by banks, Prepaid Gaming Cards and now we have pre-paid software from Microsoft :-)

It offers customers the flexibility to renew subscription according to customer's wish. This is the first time in India that such a software is made available in prepaid version. The prepaid subscription is available at a price of Rs.1,499 for a 6-month subscription. At the end of the 6 month period, 3-month renewable subscriptions will also be available.

The pricing is definitely very high in context of Indian Market. Also it is hard to convince an Indian consumer that software requires a per CPU license. The Indian consumer thinks that if he BUYS one license he can install on all his office and home PCs, laptops, etc.

Matrimony Part of Nokia Catalog

Saturday, November 03, 2007

Faced with immense competition from Apple's iPhone in the Premimum mobile phones category, Nokia has realized that it cannot survive in price sensitive markets like India, once iPhone is officially launched.

Nokia executives seems to have changed the strategy to offer more services. They have launched a social networking initiative mosh and now Nokia Catalog bundled with Bharat Matrimony. Nokia Catalog is typically a service by Nokia where users can shop for ringtones, wallpapers, games etc. However, in the context of Bharat Matrimony, this catalog is a Java based application that will show cute and smart Indian brides on your phone. [Also Grooms ;-)] They will let you communicate via SMS or Call but depends on what the Lady has set her privacy options to.

Nokia should include this application in every Symbian-Java compatible phone [not just higher end phones] and let more users hop on to the internet dating and matrimony services. The duo most rope in mobile service providers and introduce cheaper tariffs for the love birds to communicate.
