Yahoo! messenger provides you the option to be in "invisible" mode or using stealth settings you can choose to "appear offline to a friend". However, using services from XeeBer.com and VNGrabber.com, you can always find out the exact status about your friend and then send surprise messages :-) We have tested and so far it has worked good.
